Advice to grow own food, save cash and help earth

HOW would you like to grow your own healthy food, save money and help the environment at the same time?

Canterbury Bankstown Council’s free webinar series will provide you with the essential knowledge and skills to make a positive impact in your neighbourhood and divert food waste away from landfill.
Known as The Veggie Lady, Toni Salter is a qualified horticulturalist who has been teaching sustainable gardening skills since 2003.
She helps people grow their own healthy food and learn essential skills like composting to help build organic gardens.
Her free educational workshops offer advice for every garden – from inner city balconies to those living on hectares and everything in-between.
She said that during the Depression years, a lot of people grew their own food out of necessity but we lost that generation of knowledge with the arrival of double income couples more keen on climbing the corporate ladder.
“However there has certainly been a resurgence in gardening, especially during the lockdowns, because it is so easy to get started and saves money,” she said.
“Even growing a few herbs has so many benefits including sensory; use them to flavour cooking or make herbal teas.
“Crushed Rosemary reminds me of happy family roast dinners and Lemon Verbeena smells just like an Icy Pole and will take you back to your childhood.”
Whether you want to learn about composting, worm farming, keeping chickens or happy houseplants, Toni can help get you started.
