Following these matches on Saturday, October 23, and Tuesday, October 26 at CommBank Stadium with a crowd of up to 22,500 able to attend, the Matildas are all but certain to get two shots at Olympic revenge against the United States in a pair of blockbuster home friendlies on November 27 and 30.
Coach Tony Gustavsson explained he would be using the matches to prepare the team for the 2022 Asian Cup, which will be held in India in January, and with one eye on the 2023 World Cup, which Australia and New Zealand will co-host.
“I said that going into the September camp when we played against Ireland, we changed from ‘performance mode’ from the Olympics to ‘preparation mode’,” he said.
“That doesn’t mean that we are going to step on the field not trying to win – we are always going to try and win when we play every game; we need to look at this as a long run towards the World Cup in ‘23.”
Ex Lion Mary kicks off at home
WITH former Bankstown CIty Lions player Mary Fowler preparing to roar, the Matildas will host a match on home soil for the first time in 596 days when they take on Brazil in two friendlies in the next week.
