Motorcycle crashes represented 9.7 per cent of all casualties in Cumberland City, 86 per cent were multi-vehicle crashes, 14 per cent single-vehicle crashes and over three years, there has been two motorcycle fatalities and 135 serious injuries.
Minister for Transport and Roads, Andrew Constance, says there has been a disturbing increase in the number of fatalities in NSW, with 39 motorcyclists killed between January and August – 13 more than the same time period last year.
“More than half died as a result of excessive speed. Please stick to the speed limit to keep yourself and others safe on our roads, and remember you can be caught speeding anywhere, anytime,” he said.
Motorcycle Awareness Month aims to reduce the number of motorcycle crashes and improve safety for riders and other road users with various online activities aimed at driver education, rider safety and motorcycle awareness.
With the majority of riders killed or injured while travelling on country roads, Minister for Regional Transport and Roads, Paul Toole, says everything possible must be done to get riders home safely to their families at the end of the day.
