Young chalk up way to comfort

HOPING to spread a little positivity one drawing at a time, a Picnic Point family is making the most of their time at home by venturing out onto the street during their breaks and ‘chalking up’ inspiring messages on the footpath.

After Louise Meilak sent in photos of the art to her children’s school, St Christopher’s Panania has now launched a Chalk Challenge, sending chalk home in students’ learning packs for them all to create some artwork out the front of their own homes this week, with the best art to be displayed on the school’s website.
“It started out as something that my children, Imogen, 12, Campbell, 10 and Eleanor, 7, just wanted to do to cheer up our neighbours but the school jumped at the idea and the response from the local community has also been amazing,” Louise said.
“People have been leaving cards and thank you notes in our letterbox and the foot traffic is definitely increasing.
“A neighbour over the road said he had been spending more time sitting out the front just to watch all the people walk by and so we feel like we’re building a little community by spreading a bit of hope and happiness.”
St Christopher’s Principal Jamie Wahab said: “The Chalk Challenge is just one of the ways we are looking out for students’ well-being by keeping things fun and keeping them engaged in the learning from home environment.
“It can be challenging but everyone is doing the best they can; we’re all supporting each other.”
