Tips for seniors to boost health

IT’S good for your brain, body and happiness, and a well known weapon for warding off disease and early death, so why aren’t more seniors making exercise a priority?

Granville Men’s Shed co ordinator Bill Tibben, 74, says if the benefits of walking could be produced in a pill, everyone would be popping them and is encouraging seniors to at least get out of the house and go for a walk everyday during lockdown.
“I aim to walk 10,000 steps a day,” he says.
“If I don’t do it, I can really feel the difference.”
With the Men’s Shed shut at the moment, Bill is in contact with members over the phone and email to keep the social connection strong.
“It’s vital as we now know,” he said.
“Two or three decades ago, men would retire and be dead in a few years because they didn’t prioritise exercise or take steps to reduce social isolation – both of which are essential to maintaining health and extending life.
“Gardening is also beneficial exercise as are the online active programs.”
One of these, ‘Healthy and Active for Life’, is on offer via Cumberland Council and includes an info session, balance and strength exercises and resources for staying well and independent.
Designed for the over 60s, it also includes info about the group’s well-being and stepping on programs to prevent falls.
It’s on offer from Thursday, September 2, 1-2pm, with bookings required through eventbrite.com.au.
