Teachers zooming in the next best thing to classroom

PANANIA North Public Kindergarten students may not have been able celebrate their first ‘100 Days of Learning’ at school this year but they still got to dress up as ‘100-year-olds’ and party online with their classmates.

It is one of many ways the school is rising to the challenge of keeping students motivated, according to Assistant Principal Jayne Rainer.
“We had a few tricks up our sleeve from when we were learning from home last time,” she said.
“We try to keep it fresh and interesting through Google Classroom which we used last time but finding the best results from online Zoom classes.
“Primary school students, in particular, form a close bond and connection with their teacher and not being able to see them is tough.
“Thanks to Zoom, they are able to watch their teacher in front of the class and the teacher, in turn, can see the work they are doing in real time and provide immediate feedback.”
The school has also introduced ‘Well-Being Wednesday’ where the focus is not academic but designed to give students a mental health break.
“We have games and quizzes plus reading, colouring in, yoga and meditation,” Jayne said.
“Students can connect with their classmates and teacher and are then more refreshed for study.”
Inspirational talks, such as last week’s from Rio modern pentathlon Olympian Chloe Esposito, are also popular among the students and starstruck parents alike, along with updates about the school’s farmyard residents including Peter Peacock and Jack and Jill Geese.
