Giants fight Swifts in upcoming semis

THE Giants have claimed the Super Netball minor premiership with a gritty 75-73 victory over West Coast Fever and set up an all-NSW major semi-final with the NSW Swifts who defeated the Sunshine Coast Lightning 69-64 at Brisbane’s Nissan Arena.

The short-handed Giants recovered from six goals down to stun the Fever in Saturday’s clash.
The result capped a thrilling conclusion to the regular season with the Giants dressing just eight players after defenders April Brandley and Tilly McDonell were ruled out with ankle injuries.
The Giants recovered from the shock loss of young gun Kiera Austin to a season-ending knee injury in the opening round to finish on top of the ladder for the first time since the 2018 season.
“We are just so elated to get that win, to finish at the top of the table and playing for a place in the (grand) final next week,” captain Jo Harten said.
With placings in the top four up for grabs in Saturday’s crucial double-header, the Swifts held off a late challenge from the Lightning to secure a valuable double-chance as they chase a seventh national league title.
The Swifts’ title chances had looked shaky after back-to-back defeats with two rounds to play.
But consecutive wins over the Lightning and Adelaide Thunderbirds have boosted the confidence of coach Briony Akle’s squad as they strive to repeat the success of their 2019 championship run.
The Giants and Swifts do battle on Saturday, August 14, at 1pm at Nissan Arena.
