Authentic Turkish sweets to delight family

AS the name ‘Saray’ meaning ‘palace’ implies, a visit to Saray Sweets will have you indulging in Middle Eastern delicacies that are fit for a king or queen.

The brainchild of Asli Karazincir who also has a successful kebab and pizza shop, the eatery was established two years ago and has survived fires, floods and Covid-19.
“I must be doing something right,” she said.
“Customers always come back and love that I make all of our products from scratch using only high-quality, authentic ingredients,” she said.
To ensure, all the products have traditional flavours, Asli imports the pistachios and even the butter and flour from Turkey.
Operating as a shopfront and cafe with in and outdoor tables, Saray Sweets is open seven days from 9am to 10pm and offers all day Turkish coffee and tea, along with regular coffee, Turkish breakfast and all day, cheese pastry.
“The Turkish breakfast is tasty yet simple consisting of olives, cheese, tomato, cucumber, homemade bread and eggs,” Asli said.
But for any function or event or family treat, it is hard to go past the sweets, with 25 different types of Baklava alone, including walnut, hazelnut, chocolate and pistachio.
There’s also amazing Turkish ice cream which is luxuriously creamy and goes with almost everything.
Also popular is the beautiful Turkish Delight as well as Kunefe, a Middle Eastern dessert made with shredded filo pastry or fine semolina dough, soaked in syrup and layered with cheese or other ingredients such as clotted cream or nuts.
“I make milky products too like rice puddings, Tuluma, a Turkish doughnut comprising crunchy pieces of special fried dough soaked in syrup, and Borek, a pie of filo pastry filled with cheese, spinach, or minced meat, plus much more,” Asli said.
The family-owned business is also a wholesale outlet, with the delicious options all affordably priced and able to be bought in bulk.
