Dad, son to trek 8000km in car rally to fight killer

A PICNIC Point father and son have excitedly signed up for this year’s Shitbox Rally after taking part in a previous rally in 2017 in which they travelled 3,800km in a week and raised $5,000.

This time Maurice, 65, and Cameron, 28, will be travelling over 8,000km from Alice Springs to the Gold Coast via the Gulf of Carpentaria, spending each night camped under the stars from May 23-29.
Maurice said this time their ‘shitbox’ would be a beaten up, 1999 Mitsubishi but he wasn’t worried since the support crew was fantastic and pulled out all stops to get participants back on the road as quickly as possible.
He described their previous experience as awesome and said they couldn’t wait to hit the road together again.
“Cameron used to race BMX bikes and we have travelled a lot together,” he said.
“On the rally, though, you are travelling with a group of about 500 like-minded people – from garbos and housewives to doctors and lawyers – and everyone has one goal and that is to raise as much money as possible to support the Cancer Council and help find a cure to defeat the biggest scourge on earth.
“There’s no snobbery as all the cars are ‘shitboxes’.
“My son is a chiropractor and his new employer, Bounce Back Physiotherapy and Osteopathy, was kind enough to give him time off on full pay and donate to the cause.
“Without their support we wouldn’t be able to do this and we are both truly grateful for their amazing assistance.”
Maurice says they are hoping to double their efforts on last time and raise $10,000 this year.
