Donate items for first day of school

SENDING a child off to their first day of school with new stationery and books is something most families take for granted but for those hit hard by the pandemic, providing even basic items can be a struggle.

Community Migrant Resource Centre (CMRC) family services manager, Aisha Amjad, said they had found that many families from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds could not afford basic school supplies.
“Many refugee families have had their work hours reduced or lost their jobs,” she said.
However with Covid-19 restrictions easing, and face-to-face playgroup sessions resuming after running online since March last year, Ms Amjad said the CMRC and their partners decided to mark the occasion by presenting 25 families with ‘School Empower Bags’ (pictured left), containing essentials such as water bottles, stationery, notebooks and story books.
Coinciding with the start of National Playgroup Week on March 22, the special event at the Merrylands Community Centre, also included free eye tests and a multicultural story time.
