With the day also doubling as the annual general meeting and presentation day, athletes spent twice the amount of time playing their session of lawn bowls as what they normally would and Special Olympics Chair Natalie Johnston thinks the new colourful bowling balls may have had something to do with it.
“The club acquired the balls especially for the occasion which was a wonderful treat,” she said.
“It has been hosting our event for the last three or four years and is a great support to our volunteer-run, not-for-profit organisation.
“As with previous years, all of our athletes had an amazing day out with their families.”
With about 50 special needs athletes registered from Canterbury Bankstown, Special Olympics Australia – Flinders provides a range of weekly activities at local venues including basketball, Bocce, gymnastics, tennis, tenpin bowling and athletics.
“Sports participation is a powerful force,” Natalie said.
“It can shift the focus from disability to ability, from isolation to involvement.”
