Get health help with own culture

BANKSTOWN Women’s Health Centre (BWHC) is offering a range of free activity and social groups designed to get you off the couch and out and about enjoying life again after a quiet, Covid-impacted 2020 mostly spent inside.

Exercise has been shown to prevent disease, lower the risk of falls, improve mental health and well-being, strengthen social ties and boost cognitive function.
People who exercise tend to have improved immune and digestive functioning, better blood pressure and bone density, and a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis and certain cancers.
Likewise studies show that seniors who stay socially active and engaged experience a variety of benefits.
Starting up this month, an Active Women’s Group is on offer on Mondays, 9.30-10.30am, which features gentle exercise and is designed to improve your health and well-being.
Vietnamese, Arabic as well as Chinese Women’s Groups will be held on Tuesdays, with the first from 9.30-11.30am, the second from 11.30am-1.30pm and the third, 1.30-3.30pm.
Yoga/pilates, craft, jewellery making, art, wellbeing workshops and relaxation sessions will be the order of the day, with bilingual facilitators enhancing the experience and providing support for newcomers.
BWHC Operations Manager Kerrie Newcombe said taking part in the cultural group activities was very beneficial.
“It is very empowering for a woman to be exercising, learning and socialising with women from her own community with fantastic health benefits likely to follow,” she said.
Groups will meet at Bankstown Women’s Health, 24 Jacobs Street, Bankstown, which is a women’s only safe space as well as being a Covid safe environment.
