Mayors bat way to support ‘Soldier On’

WHEN two councils face off on the cricket field only one can emerge victorious, however charity Solider On was the true winner following the inaugural Mayoral Challenge Cricket Match (pictured).

Led by Mayor Steve Christou, Cumberland City Council took bragging rights with a final score of 9-117, beating City of Parramatta’s team led by Deputy Lord Mayor Michelle Garrard, who finished with a valiant 6-115.
Originally played between the former Holroyd and Parramatta City Councils, Cr Christou said the annual cricket match developed “a long-standing but very friendly rivalry” that both new councils looked forward to continuing the tradition.
“It was a close game and enjoyed by all who played and attended,” he said.
As the game was organised on short notice due to Covid-19 considerations, Cr Christou said a nominated charity was not chosen in advance but he was pleased Soldier On would be the beneficiary of a $2,000 donation from each council.
“They do some great work and that is why I have nominated this as a worthy cause for donation,” he said.
“Soldier On is a leader in supporting those who have served and continue to serve in the Australian Defence Force.
With an exemplary track record of providing practical and emotional assistance critical to building successful post-service lives,” he said.
“The Charity assists with veterans dealing with significant challenges including loss of identity, purpose and belonging for veterans and their families, and social isolation as there is a higher risk of veterans developing anxiety disorders or post traumatic stress disorders.”
