For Merrylands resident Linda Mitchell who left work while undergoing cancer treatment, volunteering has been a Godsend.
“I’ve been helping out at Central Gardens Zoo in Merrylands; feeding the animals, helping the keepers, weeding, cleaning up and just being a general hand,” she said.
“I’ve only been doing it for about six weeks but spending time in nature and with animals has definitely helped my healing journey,” she said.
“I love animals so I thought I would put in a volunteer application at the zoo and it was accepted.
“Everywhere is so understaffed at the moment and if you can give a hand somewhere, you should.
“It’s really worthwhile knowing you are helping the community; it’s so great for your soul and you help yourself when you help others.”
With horticulture studies underway, Linda next has her sights set on studying animal husbandry.
“I’m learning so much from the keepers and want to keep learning more,” she added.
With a range of positions needing to be filled, Cumberland Council has opportunities for volunteers at the Botanical Gardens, Bush Care sites, Friendship Garden and in Justice of the Peace roles plus more.
