Figures released by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), show the most at risk suburbs includes 352 cars registered in Bankstown behind Liverpool’s 604, with 218 cars also registered in Punchbowl and 212 cars in Greenacre.
While outside the top 20, Campsie, Lakemba, Chester Hill and Yagoona were also suburbs “of concern”.
ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard said the disproportionate number of outstanding airbags in some of these communities, including those from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, was concerning and it took less than a minute online to check if you are at risk.
“Manufacturers have found it difficult to reach some drivers who may not have been as responsive to the warnings and notices sent to them, calls, text messages or in the case of critical vehicles, in person visits urging them to get their airbags replaced,” she said.
“These airbags are very dangerous and have the potential to explode with too much force, even in low speed accidents, sending sharp metal fragments into the vehicle at high speed, potentially killing or seriously injuring its occupants.”
