Last Friday (August 21) marked the beginning of the year 1442 on the Islamic calendar and is a public holiday in most Muslim majority countries.
The first year of the Islamic calendar marks the “Hijri” (migration) of Islam’s prophet Muhammad in 622AD from his birth town, Mecca, to Yathrib, now called Medina.
2MFM Program Manager Faten El-Dana OAM says the event holds special significance for Muslims, as it was after Hijri that Islam gained many followers.
“During these challenging times of social distancing and having to celebrate Ramadan and Eid in isolation, 2MFM has continued to be a source of social connection and comfort for the community,” Mrs El-Dana says.
“This year marks 25 years of broadcasting for 2MFM. Since 1995, 2MFM has provided the familiar voice of home to the Muslim community with a large number being non-English speaking migrants.”
With more and more residents struggling in isolation, the need to have the connection with 2MFM has never been greater.
“We’d love to hear your feedback and suggestions on how we can improve our services and cater for the needs of everyone in the Muslim community,” Mrs El-Dana added.
“2MFM also encourages members of the community to participate as volunteers.”
Tune into 92.1FM and or call the station with feedback on 9707 2747, Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.
