Lend hand to support fire-impacted regions

CANTERBURY Bankstown is lending a helping hand to fire-affected communities and assisting in the recovery.

Several CBCity employees have taking part in regional secondments, helping the RFS and local councils hit hard by the fires, while the council has launched its own Go Spend Send initiative.
More than 5,400,000 hectares of land has been burnt in NSW over four months, which is the fundamental reason Mayor Khal Asfour says the council is offering their assistance in the form of staff secondments.
“We launched our Go Spend Send initiative last weekend to reach out to the communities who have faced extreme challenges,” he said.
“Supporting staff members on secondments in fire-affected areas is just another way we as a community can offer our resources to aid the recovery.
“I am proud to say that already, six CBCity employees are playing their part in helping affected areas get back on their feet.”
Manager of Road Operations, Philip Eapen, who assisted the RFS with recovery operations, says it is important to use the vast array of skillsets we have within Local Government, to assist people in need, in whichever way we can.
“It is an amazing opportunity to work with true professionals, dedicated to their work, in an environment you can challenge yourself in,” he said.
Deputy Mayor Bilal El-Hayek said images of families sheltering on beaches as the flames burn to the shore-line and flames towering over homes, businesses and forests, stirred a deep yearning to help – in any way they could – from our own community.
“I could not be more proud of our community and how they have responded in our fellow Australian’s darkest months of need,” he said.
