From 7am on World Polio Day the Rotary Club of Padstow will have a stall on the northern (Woolworths) side of Revesby station giving rail commuters who make a $5 donation a specially baked pastry from Bakers Maison.
Rotary Club of Padstow president Barry Thompson said Rotarians will also visit every station on the Sydney rail network, starting at 4.35am at Woolooware and finishing at 10.52pm at Tallawong, with a stop at Revesby station at 8.47pm.
Mr Thompson said polio, a vaccine-preventable disease, still threatens children in parts of the world today although great progress has been made since Rotary and its partners launched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) more than three decades ago.
“Since 1988 polio cases have dropped by 99.9 per cent, from 350,000 cases in 1988 in 125 countries to 33 cases of wild poliovirus reported in 2018 in just two countries: Afghanistan and Pakistan,” he said.
“Worldwide Rotary is planning to raise $50 million each year enable the completion of this project and this will be matched two-to-one by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.”
