Viviane de Faitaud has grown up at the Chateau de Belisama-sur-le-Lac in Brittany.
After a hailstorm destroys the chateau’s gardens, young Welshman, David Stronach, accepts the commission to plan the new gardens.
David and Viviane fall in love, but it is an impossible romance. Her father has betrothed her to a rich duke.
An embittered David sails to China where hears the story of ‘The Blue Rose’, a Chinese fable of impossible love, and discovers the blood-red rose growing in a garden. He realises that he is still in love with Viviane and must find her.
Kate says readers will be in for a few surprises.
“Most people are familiar with the French Revolution but probably don’t know what was happening in Imperial China at the same time,” she said.
“The setting is truly fascinating and at the talk, I’ll be discussing where I get my inspiration.”
