Emergency services were called to Queen Street at 10.17am and found the 72-year-old male driver trapped in his car by rubble and bricks.
Firefighters were able to clear the way for paramedics to assess the driver before extracting him from the wreck.
A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesperson said the rescue took just under an hour.
A spokesperson from NSW Ambulance confirmed that while the driver appeared to receive only minor injuries, he was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.
While sharing a wall with the damaged building, a staff member from CS Education Auburn Tutoring said their building seemed to have escaped any major damage and they were continuing to operate as normal.
He said while their business wasn’t open at the time of the accident, a lot of students used the street area to get to and from nearby schools and it was lucky no pedestrians were involved in the accident.
With repairs already being carried out, Cumberland Council’s general manager Hamish McNulty said orders have been issued for engineers to provide a report as to the structural adequacy of affected buildings.
