Firefighters also rescued four people trapped in a smoke-logged elevator on the 19th floor of one of the unit blocks, after the Toyota SUV, thought to have been stolen, was driven into the courtyard of the complex on the corner of Pitt and Gladstone Streets around 2.45am.
It crashed into the corner of a tower block, forcing the evacuation of least 250 occupants from three residential buildings.
No-one was seriously injured.
