When Fire and Rescue crews arrived about 9pm, they found many of the occupants had already made their own way to safety, escaping the blaze which had started in a garbage room. Firefighters then went from unit-to-unit to ensure everyone had escaped.
The blaze was quickly contained and extinguished, however the entire building was affected by smoke and large fans were needed to clear the air.
Several residents suffered smoke inhalation, with six treated by paramedics.
Superintendent Scott Dodson from Fire and Rescue says this is a timely reminder that calling Triple Zero (000) for a fire emergency can be the difference between life and death, or a building or other property being saved or destroyed.
