Men charged over cig theft worth $7m

A MERRYLANDS business is one of three searched last Tuesday as a part of a major investigation into the suspected theft of $7 million worth of cigarettes from a warehouse in Alexandria in April.
Strike Force Pyrope was established by Redfern detectives, who also executed search warrants at businesses on Ballantrae Drive at St Andrews and Queen Street at Campbelltown.
Searches were also carried out at homes in Toscana Street at Prestons, and Begovich Crescent at Abbotsbury.
Police allegedly seized about 1,550 cartons of cigarette, about $250,000 cash and two Toyota Hilux vehicles during the raids.
A 44-year-old man arrested in Merrylands has been charged with two counts of receiving goods suspected of being stolen, and knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime.
Officers also arrested a 46-year-old man in Prestons, charging him with six counts of receiving goods suspected of being stolen, and knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime.
Inquiries are continuing.

Seven brawlers arrest
SEVEN men were arrested during an alleged confrontation with police at Lidcombe Railway Station on Saturday night.
Police were called to the station just before 10pm following reports that a number of passengers were causing trouble on a train travelling from Sydney Olympic Park.
Officers from Auburn Police Area Command, tried to move the group of approximately 30 men on, however they allegedly became hostile and abusive.
After calling for extra assistance, officers managed to disperse the group with two men, aged 24 and 29, issued with a Field Court Attendance Notice (FCAN) for behaving in an offensive manner and resisting an officer.
A 27-year-old man also received a FCAN for affray, assault police, and resist officer offences, while a 26-year-old man was issued an FCAN for assaulting police. A 29-year-old man was also issued a criminal infringement notice for failing to comply with direction.
Two more men were released pending further inquiries and police are also examining CCTV footage.

Hurt in eight-car crash
TWO men were hospitalised after an eight-car pileup on Woodville Road at Old Guildford on Monday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 4.45pm with Ambulance NSW paramedics treating the two men at the scene before they were taken to Westmead Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Police were told a vehicle travelling north crossed a medium strip and hit several cars travelling south.
The accident left the road blocked in both directions for several hours with diversions in place while the Crash Investigation Unit examined the scene.
