THE allocation of $4.8 million of planning money for the extension of the Sydenham to Bankstown Metro, is causing uncertainty in suburbs like Georges Hall and Condell Park, with the NSW Opposition calling for the Government to finally reveal the route onto Liverpool.
State Labor MP for Bankstown Tania Mihailuk has concerns the extension may bypass the existing rail lines and instead cut through Condell Park, Bass Hill, Milperra and Georges Hall.
"Why won't they be clear about the route," Ms Mihailuk said.
"The whole project is shrouded in secrecy."
Acting Opposition Leader Michael Daley joined Ms Mihailuk and candidate for East Hills, Cameron Murphy, last Thursday to restate calls for the Government to bench the South West Metro plans and halt their investigation of an extension to Liverpool.
Ms Mihailuk says there are more than 100,000 residents, 34 schools and several thousand businesses within the catchment area where the metro may be extended to Liverpool. She suggested that the $4.8 million would be better spent installing lifts at Yagoona, Chester Hill, Birrong and Villawood stations.
The metro and the extension to Liverpool, Ms Mihailuk says is an excuse to dump more units into Canterbury Bankstown. Labor has already committed to scrapping the Sydenham to Bankstown Metro if elected to Government.
Shadow Minister for Planning, Michael Daley, said communities deserved certainty.
"This project has been shrouded in secrecy from day one and things aren't getting better," he said.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the Government had allocated funding for corridor assessments and preservation across Greater Sydney, including the Western Sydney Corridors Project.
"All infrastructure projects, including possible future Metro extensions will be subject to a strategic business case, funding allocation and robust community consultation," the spokesperson said.
"As part of Australia's biggest public transport project - Sydney Metro - we are currently focussed on delivering a world-class Metro service to the south west through to Bankstown."
