SIX Punchbowl Boys High School students, who named their band after the classroom where they jammed, have taken out a state-wide youth music competition.
Band 320, have won the annual Youth Rock contest, which has launched international careers for bands like Silverchair.
Topping 32 other bands representing a vast range of NSW comprehensive, selective and performing arts schools, the Punchbowl boys shone bright, winning the competition as well as $2,000 worth of musical instruments, a professional photo shoot, legal advice and five days of recording time to work on a new record.
The Youth Rock band competition is part of NSW Youth Week, and has been running since the 1980s. It's the largest unsigned band competition in NSW.
Band 320 is made up of Wilkinson Papalii-Afoa, Micah Papalii-Talanai, Eliata Ulutui, Lucas Tekii, Theodore Crysma Tavete and Yoosuf Mohamed.
Punchbowl Boys' High School acting principal Robert Patruno said the school was immensely proud of the band's achievement.
"This truly highlights what is achievable through hard work and the ability to focus on your learning to achieve any goal," Mr Patruno said.
Teacher Michael White has been coaching the boys for the past three years in the competition.
"I'm so proud of my boys," he said.
Yoosuf says the band's name pays homage to their roots.
"It's all about paying respect to where we came from," he said.
"We used to just jam in Room 320 at Punchbowl Boys' and now we're Youth Rock winners. We're going to take it to the next level."
Micah said that when he heard the announcement that Band 320 had won, his "heart dropped".
"I was in tears that night," he said.
"I honestly thought we weren't going to win … It meant a lot to us."
Eliata said winning the competition provided opportunities.
"This is just the beginning," he said.
