Brewing up student skill

STUDENTS at a Lakemba school are learning how to brew a good cup of coffee.
Canterbury Vale Secondary School's coffee shop is proving popular with nearby businesses and schools in the area, while providing invaluable workplace skills for students.
The school's cafe was made possible through the Sydney Motorway Corporation's (SMC) community grant scheme, which supports initiatives within the WestConnex corridor.
Canterbury Vale Secondary School Assistant Principal Michael Bolt said the grant was helping to support at-risk and vulnerable students gain skills and confidence.
Mr Grant said through the grant, the school employed a barista and hospitality trained teacher who are delivering an education program where students are placed in a real-life working environment running the school cafe.
"They're gaining skills in everything from making coffees, food preparation, cooking, stock management and even marketing," Mr Bolt said.
"The program has proved incredibly successful with more than 100 students to-date taking part and we're seeing some really positive results with increased attendance and a reduction in suspensions and negative behaviour.
"It's a fantastic way to re-engage at-risk youth with education, build their self-esteem and interact positively with the local community with the cafe proving popular with nearby businesses and schools in the area."
Community groups and organisations within the WestConnex corridor, are being encouraged to apply for the next round of SMC Community Grant Scheme.
SMC CEO Dennis Cliche said since the scheme, which provides grants up to $10,000, was established last year, the program had been embraced by local communities.
Applications for Round 3 of the scheme close on Friday.
