‘United Nation’ school wins

ACHIEVING "substantially above average gains" in their NAPLAN results, two local schools are among the 39 NSW public schools congratulated by the Department of Education secretary Mark Scott.
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority identified both Merrylands East and Auburn North Public Schools (ANPS), as having significant performance gains in student reading and/or numeracy achievements as students progressed from Year 3 to Year 5, and from Year 7 to Year 9 between 2015 and 2017.
"The best measure of effective education is how student results improve over time, and that is why NAPLAN is such an important diagnostic tool for schools and families," Mr Scott said.
"We can learn so much from these schools about how they achieved these impressive gains so that other schools can benefit from their success."
Principal Mark Harris said the ANPS learning community of students, parents and staff, was very proud of everything it achieved including NAPLAN results, adding that with students from 55 different countries, they believed they were "multiculturalism at its best and most successful".
While theoretically all their families are socio-economically disadvantaged, he said they had been able to strip that away as a result of several factors, including the successful engagement of parents, the selection of teachers and the development of a "strong collective school community efficacy".
"We believe our school models community cohesion, social harmony and unity. We believe we are the United Nations," Mr Harris said.
"Our school's staff, students, and parents always work so very hard and work so harmoniously together.
"Auburn North is an aspirational learning community and while were pleased with our 2017 NAPLAN results, we are determined to achieve even better results this year."
