NARWEE teenager Dallen Schmidt couldn't wait to tell his friends and family of his upcoming adventure to the former battlefields and memorial sites of the Western Front in Europe.
Dallen is one of 20 students from across the state who was selected from a ballot for the 2018 Premier's Anzac Memorial Scholarship.
"I was extremely excited when I learned I won the scholarship. I immediately informed friends and family," he said.
State MP for East Hills, Glenn Brookes, visited De La Salle College, Revesby Heights, last week, where he congratulated Dallen.
The 14-year-old will visit Europe in June and July 2018.
The students will travel to Flanders in Belgium to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of Hamel on July 4. The 13-day tour will also take in other significant Australian battlefields including the Ypres Salient, Passchendaele and the Somme.
"I applied because I love history and knew an opportunity like this only comes along once in a lifetime," Dallen said.
"It will give me a first person look at where the Australian soldiers fought and died."
Mr Brookes said the community was extremely proud of Dallen. Almost 100 schools from across NSW applied for the scholarships, he said.
"All of the applicants should be commended for their strong leadership qualities and interest in Australian history," he said.
"This is a sensational opportunity for Dallen to represent our community and gain a better understanding of the Anzac legacy."
The students will be joined by an official party, including three supervising teachers and a tour historian.
