HUNDREDS of trees and plants have been given away to residents in celebration of National Tree Day.
Taking place at Steel Park, Marrickville, the giveaway featured advanced size trees and Australian natives.
Inner West Council's Urban Forest Manager Gwilym Griffiths said the trees included Banksias, Illawarra Flame Trees, Lilly Pilly trees and more.
"They'll make an instant impact in backyards and on our local tree canopy," he said. "Trees provide a multitude of benefits including providing shade and cooling, reducing energy costs, increasing property values – and the obvious environmental benefits such as oxygen production and pollution reduction."
