A MAN has been charged with allegedly deliberately lighting a fire at Bankstown's Bellevue Reception Centre earlier this year.
Strike Force Babel was established by detectives from the Property Crime Squad's Arson Unit and Bankstown Local Area Command, to investigate two deliberately lit fires at the Restwell Street function centre in December 2016 and January 2017.
Emergency services were called to the first fire about 4.45am on Boxing Day, December 26. The blaze was extinguished a short time later, but had caused major smoke damage. About 6pm eight days later, on Tuesday January 3, emergency services were called to another fire in the Bankstown CBD building, which caused significant structural damage.
Following inquiries, Strike Force Babel detectives arrested 33-year-old Omar Jamal Eddine during a vehicle stop at Wiley Park just before 4pm on Friday. He was taken to Bankstown Police Station and charged with dishonesty for gain, damaging property by fire.
Eddine did not apply for bail in Parramatta Bail court on Saturday.
