LAST Mother's Day, a young passenger handed inner-west Sydney bus driver, Fiona Towell a chocolate bar as a gift.
Fiona, based at the State Transit Kingsgrove depot, says a total stranger handing her a gift is what she loves most about her job.
"Every day is different," she said.
"I have one older gentleman passenger that just gets on the bus to have a chat as his wife died a few years ago and he loves the company.
"On Mother's Day, a young girl who doesn't even celebrate the tradition brought me a chocolate bar. This small gesture melted my heart."
A resident of Peakhurst, Fiona has been driving for 12 months after she was retrenched from her previous job in administration.
"I love my job, like any job it is what you make it. Your customers are your clients, you treat them how you would like to be treated and the rewards are endless. I love being in the fresh air and I have a greater appreciation for our beautiful city and the people that live in it."
The NSW Government is on the lookout for more bus drivers – with a major recruitment drive underway to bring on up to an extra 200 full and part time bus drivers to meet the needs of a growing city.
Transport Minister Andrew Constance said a new campaign is calling for motivated people with good customer service skills to drive the State Transit bus fleet.
"The best part about it all – is that no bus driving experience is necessary. State Transit will provide comprehensive training for budding drivers in safety, customer service and operating buses."
