STOPPING into the Priceline Pharmacy at Merrylands for a free, 10-minute check last week, State MP for Granville, Julia Finn, joined Australia's Biggest Blood Pressure Check.
The Stroke Foundation and Priceline Pharmacy teamed up to offer the free health checks earlier this month.
"I was shocked to learn from the Stroke Foundation that almost 32,000 people in the federal electorate of Parramatta, suffer from high blood pressure, putting themselves at serious risk of stroke," Ms Finn said.
Stroke Foundation NSW state manager Teresa Howarth says stroke kills more women than breast cancer, more men than prostate cancer and leaves thousands with an ongoing disability.
"Yet stroke is largely preventable," she said.
"Too many Australians are unaware of their stroke risk and the simple steps they can take to make a significant difference to their health.
"This includes controlling your blood pressure, keeping active, avoiding smoking and maintaining a healthy diet."
A person's stroke risk is assessed by a blood pressure reading in conjunction with lifestyle and family history questions.
