IN just over two years of operation, headspace Bankstown has helped more than 700 young people with their mental health needs, on 5,400 separate occasions.
headspace Bankstown has also seen individuals in need of help return eight times on average, proving that the service is essential to local young people.
Significantly, about half of all young people are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, making the centre an Australian leader when it comes to making a difference in multicultural communities.
Having started with just five clinicians in March 2015, headspace Bankstown now has a team of 20 clinicians providing support to young people aged from 12 to 25 years.
Services include mental health support, education and employment services, as well as alcohol and drug support. The centre's GP focusses on mental, sexual and general health.
"The local headspace centre has been an invaluable addition to mental health services for young people who would otherwise miss out on early intervention support," headspace Bankstown's Clinical and Operations Manager Tom Traae said.
Young people from any area can simply walk into the headspace centre, or phone, be referred by their family or GP or connect on social media.
headspace Bankstown is operated by Flourish Australia and supported by partners The Black Dog Institute, South West Sydney Local Health District, Canterbury Bankstown City Council, Salvation Army, Aftercare, New Horizons, One Door Mental Health and the Drug and Alcohol Multicultural Education Centre.
Young people can drop in to 41-45 Rickard Road, phone on 9393 9669 or email headspace.bankstown@flourishaustralia.org.au. For online info, visit www.headspace.org.au.
