HOURS of extra training and preparation has paid off for an eight-person team of volunteers from the Marrickville State Emergency Service (SES) unit who won their region's rescue competition on Sunday.
Held at Allianz Stadium, Marrickville Unit's team tackled a series of eight different scenarios including mass casualties, urban search and flood rescue as they pitted their skills in against other teams from the SES Sydney Southern Region.
Thanking all those who helped with the training, as well everyone involved in organising and running the event, Marrickville Unit local controller Michael Carney said he was proud of his team's win.
"The Unit has been entering the rescue competition for the last 10 years and the result on the weekend, shows how far we have come in terms of building our capabilities," he said.
Team member Liam Hogan says they can't wait to share the skills and experiences gained during the competition with other volunteers, while Benita Adam said the win justified the effort they had all put in.
"The extra training days were exhausting but the outcome on the day made it all worthwhile," she said.
"Being part of the NSW SES gives you access to a great deal of people who you can learn from and grow with and do really fun things while helping the local community."
Marrickville will now represent the Sydney Southern Region in the State Rescue Competition to be held later this year.
