WITH Australia's population ageing, there's no surprise that Cumberland Council's 'Over 55s Leisure and Learning' groups are so popular.
"It's a way for our seniors to socialise and feel inclusion in our community," the council's senior group coordinator, Teneille Bush, said.
The Over 55s Leisure and Learning Social Group was formed 15 years ago by Parramatta City Council, and was taken over by Cumberland Council in October last year, after the local government amalgamations.
Under the Over 55s Leisure and Learning initiative, six different focus groups centre on various activities, including singing, art, dance and exercise.
The most popular of the seniors' activities, says Ms Bush, are the two social groups, which meet at Granville and Guildford.
"The combined groups engage over 70 seniors each week," Ms Bush said.
"They can range in age from their 50s through to their 80s, and they come from all walks of life and backgrounds."
The Granville social group, which meets every Thursday from 10am to 1pm at the Granville Youth and Community Recreation Centre, participate in a range of activities, including talks, craft and outings, over morning tea.
The singing group meets at the Auburn Centre for Community on Tuesdays and Guildford Youth Centre on Wednesdays. The art classes meet on Tuesdays at the Guildford Youth Centre. For further info and the cost of courses, call 9632 2765.
