THE first stage of Marrickville Park's $2.7 million refurbishment has opened.
Stage One of the park upgrade includes a new playground and picnic area, fitness equipment, tree and garden planting and part installation of the new park loop pathway and Sports Walk of Honour.
Inner West Council administrator Richard Pearson said the council was delivering a number of strategic community projects and a major program of community infrastructure projects.
"This project was a significant one for the former Marrickville Council," he said. "It encompasses improvements to local infrastructure and many benefits for our community and sports clubs.
"Along with the upgrade of Camperdown Park – Stage One will be completed there shortly, too – Marrickville Park upgrade will deliver to our residents more beautiful open spaces and many more recreational opportunities."
The Sports Walk honours high-achieving local sportspeople who were born or lived in the Marrickville area.
Plaques dot the new loop pathway, acknowledging the careers of sportspeople who were nominated by the local community.
Other works completed during Stage One, include upgrades to the tennis club building and new sports oval picket fencing.
Lights have been installed and will be activated when power supply is provided in one to two weeks' time.
The new World War II memorial sculpture by Andrew Poppleton, will be officially unveiled on Remembrance Day this Friday, November 11, at 3pm.
