Sydney University’s Biochemical Pharmacology Professor teaches and also leads a research team looking at how brain cells communicate and how that communication breaks down in different diseases.
She was a recent Gender Equity Chair, Asian Biophysics Association’s secretary-general, Australian Research Council Future Fellow and Australian Ambassador to the Biophysical Society.
This year she won the Nancy Millis Medal to honour her contributions made to science and last year was presented with The Edna Ryan Award for her contributions to justice and equity in the workplace.
She has also received Supervisor of the Year Award, Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association, 2021, the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Mentoring and Leadership, 2019, the JA Young Medal, Sydney Medical School, 2017, Sydney Medical School Award for Excellence, Outstanding Mentoring and Leadership, 2017, Tall Poppy Award, Australian Institute of Policy and Science, 2012, AK McIntyre Prize, Australian Physiological Society, 2010, and the Rebecca Cooper Medal, Bosch Institute, 2007.
She said the AM recognition came as a complete shock.
“I have no idea who nominated me but was thrilled to receive the award,” she said.
“I am very proud to have been acknowledged in this way.”

RECIPIENT of numerous awards for her achievements, Earlwood’s Professor Renae Ryan has won an AM in the general division of the Order of Australia on the King’s Birthday Honours List for significant service to biomedical science as a researcher, and to diversity and inclusion.
